改・ジャックと豆の木
Jack and the Beanstalk
2050年のロンドン。人々は食糧危機に苦しんでいました。タワーブリッジのたもとに建つ一軒の小さな家。そこに貧しい科学者のジャックは住んでいました。
彼は、食糧危機に打ち勝つことのできる大量生産に適した新種の作物の研究に取り組んでいました。でも研究は思うように行かず、いつも失敗ばかり。成果のでない日々にジャックはだんだんと追い詰められていきました。
今日もまた失敗。ジャックは失敗作の入った試験官を窓から放り投げました。
次の日の朝、庭に出たジャックは驚きました。実験用に植えていた豆の芽が、ジャックの身の丈を超える程の大きさに成長していたのです。
日に日に豆は大きくなり、木のようになりました。そして、実もつき始めました。ジャックは木にはしごをかけ、実をひとつ採ってみることにしました。
パンパンに膨れた莢を開けると、あら不思議。中にはキャベツやジャガイモ、りんごなどなど、色んな作物が詰まっていたのです。
さっそくジャックは豆の木の周りに、実を採集するためのやぐらを組み始めました。
ジャックは豆の木から採れる作物を採集しては、ロンドンの市民たちに売りました。そのお金でやぐらを高く高く組んでいきました。
豆の木と、その周りに組まれたやぐらは、ついに雲を超える高さにまでなりました。
この日もジャックは実を採るために豆の木に登りました。下の実はもう採り尽くしてしまっていたので、雲の上までやぐらを登らなければなりません。登るのに疲れたジャックは木の上で眠ってしまいました。
目を覚ますと、ジャックは豆の莢に包まれていました。ふと、ジャックは思います。自分がこうしている間に他の人に食べ物を盗られるのではないかと。居ても立っても居られないジャックは、懸命に莢を破ろうとします。しかし、莢は固く閉じていて、びくともしませんでした。
その後ジャックはどこへ行ったのか。行方を知る者は誰もいません。
London in 2050. People are suffering from a food crisis. There was a small house at the front of the Tower Bridge. A poor scientist, Jack lived there.
He worked diligently everyday to invent a new crop suitable for mass production that could overcome the food crisis. But the research didn’t go the way he wanted, it always failed. Jack felt depressed day by day.
Failure again today. Jack threw the examiner with the failed work out the window.
The next morning, Jack was surprised when he went out to the garden. The bean sprouts planted for the experiment had grown to a size that exceeded Jack’s height.
Day by day, the bean grow bigger and became like trees. And it started to bear fruits. Jack laddered the beanstalk and picked one fruit.
Curiously, when he opened the swollen pod, it was filled with various crops such as cabbage, potatoes and apples and so on.
Jack immediately started building scaffoldings around the beanstalk to collect the fruits.
Jack collected crops from the beanstalk and sold them to London citizens. The money was used to build the scaffoldings high and high.
The beanstalk and the surrounding scaffoldings have finally reached a height above the clouds.
One day, Jack climbed the beanstalk to get the fruits. He had to climb above the clouds because he had collected all the fruits on the lower. Jack was exhausted of climbing and felt asleep on the beanstalk.
Upon waking up, Jack was wrapped in a bean pod. Suddenly, Jack thought “while I’m doing this, someone could steal food.” Jack, wanted to escape from here immediately, he tried to break the pod, but the pod were tightly closed and never broke.
After that, no one knows where Jack is.
