“Chantra”, which means moon in Thai, is a lamp designed for the collaborative event “The Homesick Moon” with Thai artists Juli Baker and Summer.

Many of the countless scraps that are generated at construction sites are discarded every day. This lamp was born from repeated conversations with a carpenter, while trying to think of ways to utilize such scraps.

The base was made by referencing the design of Japanese pillars, and the lampshade is made of Sugihara-gami, which is handmade paper in Taka-cho, Hyogo Prefecture. This shade is made of a single sheet of washi paper held in place with just a wedge. The size of the paper, called “minoban,” which is unique to handmade paper, can be easily replaced with other washi paper or A3-sized paper depending on your mood or preference.

The lamp’s base is made from a Taiwan Cypress pillar that was removed when a shrine was renovated, and had been stored in a carpenter’s warehouse in Inami-cho, Hyogo Prefecture. Taiwan Cypress, which has a unique fragrance, has been used in temples and shrines since ancient times, but since cutting it is now prohibited, it is difficult to obtain new lumbers. The lumber used this time has a rare wood grain pattern called Sasamoku, which resembles overlapping bamboo leaves.

The finishing wax is an original 100% natural beeswax that the carpenter created together with a beekeeper from Inami-cho. We aimed to create a simple and beautiful appearance while making use of carpentry techniques and local industries.
